Christmas can be one of the most difficult times for homeless people. As families come together to enjoy food and gifts, many homeless people can be reminded of what they have lost.
Bradford Council wants people to know that there are a range of services that can help.
The Council funds an organisation to help people who are sleeping rough or at risk of sleeping rough.
Bradford No Second Night Out, run by Humankind, is open 365 days a year and offers a range of services to rough sleepers including outreach work, assessments and advice as well as co-ordinating the delivery of the Cold Weather provision for rough sleepers.
They can also provide short term emergency accommodation when people have nowhere else to stay.
If people are concerned about someone sleeping rough in Bradford, they can contact telephone 01274 309165 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The service operates from Discovery House – 133 Barkerend Road, Bradford, BD3 9AU.
No Second Night Out will respond to referrals within 24 hours and aims to identify and work with the individual to assess their housing and other needs as quickly as possible.
People can also contact Street Link, a national organisation that helps members of the public to connect people sleeping rough with services that can help.
Telephone Streetlink on 0300 500 0914 and they will forward the details to Bradford No Second Night Out who will then make contact with the rough sleeper.
For day time support and activities, Bradford Council has commissioned the Salvation Army to provide a day shelter for people who are homeless or rough sleeping.
The day shelter is open 365 days a year to anyone over 16 who is in need of support or advice.
Facilities at the day shelter include showers, laundry, hot drinks and light snacks, phone and internet access. Services available include support sessions, volunteering and skills development and signposting to specialist agencies as needed.
Salvation Army’s day shelter is located at 371 Leeds Road, Bradford BD3 9NG and can be contacted by calling 01274 397211.
Information on projects in the district which provide meals or food free of charge, or on a pay-as-you-feel basis, can be found at wellspringstogether.org.uk/resources-bradford.
